What is Polarization?

Polarization refers to the phenomenon where the vibration vector of a transverse wave — which oscillates perpendicular to the wave’s direction of travel — is oriented along specific directions. Longitudinal waves cannot be polarized. This directional asymmetry of vibration relative to the propagation direction is the defining feature of polarization, and it is a key distinction between transverse and longitudinal waves.

 

What is a Polarizer?

A polarizer is an optical component that converts unpolarized natural light into polarized light. It selectively transmits light whose electric field vibrates along a specific axis, while blocking or absorbing light vibrating along the orthogonal axis, enabling precise control over the polarization state of incident light.
