Applications of Endoscope Rod Lenses in Medical and Industrial Fields: How Processing Precision and Coating Technology Shape Imaging Quality

As the core optical component of modern endoscopes, rod lenses have fundamentally replaced traditional discrete lens systems with their solid rod-shaped structure, delivering superior light transmission, stable optical path and compact size. From operating rooms to industrial production lines, rod lens endoscopes have become indispensable visual tools, and their imaging performance is essentially determined by two core factors: processing precision of the lens itself and optical coating technology.

1. Applications of Rod Lenses in the Medical Field

In clinical medicine, rod lens technology is the cornerstone of rigid endoscopes, widely used in diagnosis and minimally invasive surgery across multiple specialties:

Abdominal and pelvic surgery: Laparoscopes and hysteroscopes equipped with rod lenses enable surgeons to perform precise operations such as gallbladder removal, hysterectomy and appendectomy through tiny incisions, greatly reducing patient trauma, bleeding and postoperative recovery time.

Orthopedics: Arthroscopes with rod lens systems allow direct visualization of intra-articular lesions in knees, shoulders and hips, supporting minimally invasive treatments for meniscus injury, ligament reconstruction and synovial lesions.

Diagnostic endoscopy: Rod lens cystoscopes and laryngoscopes provide high-definition images of the urinary tract and respiratory tract, helping doctors detect early inflammation, polyps and tumors without open surgery.

Compared with flexible fiber endoscopes, rod lens rigid endoscopes have higher resolution and true color reproduction, which is critical for identifying subtle lesions and ensuring surgical safety.

2. Applications of Rod Lenses in the Industrial Field

In industry, rod lens endoscopes (also called borescopes) are the core equipment for non-destructive testing (NDT), solving the problem of visual inspection in narrow, inaccessible internal spaces:

Aerospace industry: Used to inspect internal defects of turbine blades, combustion chambers and engine pipelines, detecting cracks, corrosion and foreign object damage without disassembling the engine, which greatly reduces maintenance costs and risks.

Pipeline and pressure vessel inspection: Rod lens borescopes can go deep into oil and gas pipelines, chemical pressure vessels and boiler pipes to check weld quality, corrosion status and blockages, ensuring production safety and compliance.

Precision manufacturing: Applied to internal quality inspection of precision castings, automotive engine cylinders and hydraulic components, identifying burrs, machining defects and assembly errors inside workpieces.

Public security and special industries: Used for explosion-proof inspection, search and rescue in confined spaces, and internal detection of hazardous containers.

The rigid structure of rod lenses ensures stable imaging even in harsh environments with high temperature, high humidity and dust, meeting the demanding requirements of industrial scenarios.

3. Influence of Processing Precision on Imaging Quality

The imaging performance of a rod lens is highly dependent on ultra-precise machining, and any dimensional or shape error will directly cause optical aberration and image degradation:

End face flatness & parallelism: The two end faces of the rod lens must achieve nanoscale flatness and strict parallelism. If the flatness is insufficient, it will cause wavefront distortion, reducing image sharpness; if the parallelism deviates, it will lead to light deflection and image offset. High-end medical rod lenses usually require a flatness better than λ/10 (λ=632.8nm) to ensure diffraction-limited imaging.

Concentricity and diameter tolerance: The coaxial accuracy between the outer diameter of the rod lens and the optical axis directly affects the alignment of the entire optical system. Poor concentricity will cause coma and astigmatism, resulting in blurred edges of the field of view.

Surface quality: Micro scratches, bubbles and impurities on the lens surface will cause light scattering, reduce image contrast, and even form stray light spots in the field of view under strong light. Medical-grade rod lenses require strict scratch-dig specifications (such as 10/5) to ensure flawless imaging.

In short, higher processing precision means lower optical aberration, higher resolution and more uniform image brightness across the full field of view.

4. Influence of Coating Technology on Imaging Performance

Optical coating is another key technology that determines the performance of rod lenses. Different film systems can optimize light transmission, environmental adaptability and service life from multiple dimensions:

Anti-reflective (AR) coating: The most basic and core coating. Without AR coating, about 4% of light will be reflected at each glass-air interface, and a multi-lens endoscope will lose more than 30% of light energy. Broadband AR coating can reduce the reflectivity of visible light band to below 0.5%, significantly improving image brightness and contrast, and reducing glare and ghosting. For multi-spectral endoscopes, customized AR coatings can also optimize transmission for specific wavelengths such as 405nm (blue light) and 850nm (near infrared).

Hard protective coating: Industrial endoscopes often face friction, dust and chemical corrosion. Hard coatings (such as diamond-like carbon DLC coating) can improve the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the lens surface, extend the service life of the rod lens, and maintain stable optical performance in harsh environments.

Special functional coatings: Such as anti-fog coatings for medical endoscopes, which prevent lens fogging caused by temperature differences and body fluids during surgery; and hydrophobic and oleophobic coatings, which make the lens surface easy to clean and reduce contamination interference.

The matching degree of coating process and application scenarios directly determines the actual use effect and durability of the endoscope.

From minimally invasive surgery that saves lives to industrial testing that ensures safety, endoscope rod lenses play an irreplaceable role with their excellent optical performance. The continuous improvement of processing precision and the continuous innovation of coating technology are the core driving forces for the upgrading of endoscope imaging quality. In the future, with the development of ultra-precision manufacturing and new optical film materials, rod lens endoscopes will move towards higher resolution, smaller size and stronger environmental adaptability, supporting more application scenarios in medical and industrial fields.
