Penta prisms are five-sided optical prisms that deflect light by 90° without inverting or reversing the original image. As a key component for defining right angles in optical systems, penta prisms are widely used in plumb leveling and distance measurement.

Penta prisms rely on mirror reflection rather than total internal reflection. Since light enters at an angle below the critical angle, the two reflective surfaces are coated with reflective materials for mirror-like reflection, while the two transmissive surfaces feature anti-reflective coatings to minimize reflection. The fifth surface of the penta prism has no optical function.
The 90° deflection angle of penta prisms remains unaffected by rotation around an axis parallel to the intersection of the two reflective surfaces, ensuring stable right-angle light reflection regardless of prism movement.
