Roof prisms are precision optical components engineered to rotate, invert images, and deflect light paths by 90°. Ideal for telescope eyepieces and a wide range of optical instruments, these prisms excel at flipping the inverted image from the objective lens, correcting it to an upright orientation, and bending the light path by 90°—all while maintaining accurate visual direction for the observer.

Roof prisms owe their unique functionality to the presence of a roof surface—a core feature that defines their optical performance. This so-called roof surface is a roof-shaped reflective structure formed by two intersecting reflective surfaces within the light path. The edge where these two surfaces meet is positioned at the center of the light path, which is why some roof prisms exhibit a visible dividing line in the middle. This phenomenon arises from the prism splitting the light beam into two halves, then precisely splicing them back together to achieve image adjustment.
